The Lure of the RV

The RV has been a part of American automotive culture for quite some time now and their popularity doesn't seem to be declining anytime soon either. An RV is a van that has been extended to include a ton of extra features including a kitchen, a sitting area, a bedroom, a bathroom and much more. They routinely cost well over $100,000 to purchase and can be purchase at car dealerships that carry them or at dealerships that specifically specialize in selling and renting RVs. RVs are used by people that love to travel the country by vehicle but don't want to cram all of their belongings into a moving van or into the trunk of their car.

RV is short for recreational vehicle. That is just what these types of vehicles are. They are manufactured and distributed for recreational purposes. Even though they look like they can be mobile homes, they really aren't. They are used more for recreational purposes. People can live in them for a certain amount of time, especially if they are embarking on a cross-country trip. RVs can be manufactured in a small size or in a very large size. Some of them even have a side-out extension. This is when the side of the vehicle can be extended out of the vehicle once it is parked via a motor. This makes for more room inside of the vehicle for eating, sleeping, or lounging.

There are well over 10 different forms of recreational vehicles on the market today. They include Class A motor homes, Bus Conversions, Class B camper van, Class C motor homes, Truck Camper, Folding Trailer, Travel Trailer, Teardrop Trailer, Hybrid Trailer, Fifth-Wheel Trailer, Park Model, Toter home and a Toy Trailer. A Class A motor home is one that is built either on a truck chassis, a motor vehicle chassis, or a commercial bus chassis. The side-outs mentioned above first appeared in 1989 and they allow for more room than would fit on the road. A Bus Conversion is a commercial passenger bus that has been converted to a motor home. It has beds, a kitchen, a bathroom, and a lounge area. It is larger than most RVs and is typically the largest RV you will find on the market today.

A Class B Camper van is built using a conventional van but this van has either the roof raised or the back has been replaced with a low-profile body. A Class C motor home is built on a truck chassis and has an attached cabin section. A Truck Camper is one that is built into the bed of a pickup truck and it typically can be removed when not in use. These fit perfectly in the bed of the pickup truck. Some of them do hangover if necessary. A Folding Trailer is more commonly referred to as a pop-up or tent camper that collapses for towing and storage. These can be towed by almost any vehicle on the automotive market today. A Travel Trailer is a camper that can be towed by mostly larger vehicles and it has a bumper or a hitch for towing.

If you want to become a truck driver and enter the transportation industry, there are several requirements that you must fulfill. A lot of companies will pay for your training but you need to know what may be expected of you. Most Trucking Companies will ask that you are at least 21 years of age for interstate driving or 18 years old for intrastate driving. They also require you to pass the DOT physical exam, a drug test screen exam and ask that you posses a valid driver license issued in the state in which you live. But the most universal requirement of them all is the Commercial Driver License (CDL). If you do not have this permit you can not drive trucks of more than 26,000 lbs hauling capacity. Even if you have experience on the transportation business you must have this permit.

The CDL test is divided in two sections: the General Knowledge Test and the Road Driving Test. The first part is a written test which includes subjects like endorsements, air brakes, cargo vehicles, combination vehicles, hazardous materials, passenger vehicles, tank vehicles, school bus endorsement and doubles and triples.

The second part is the driving test which includes: pre-trip inspection and on the road driving skills. There are some practical techniques that you can practice that will help you to prepare to pass the CDL test. First, establish a study schedule. This allows you to maximize your studying time. A good technique for this is to study one hour before work and then one hour after work but if you do not work yet the best moment to study is in the morning when your mind is fresh. Later, do a review in the afternoon and quiz yourself. It is best that you not study very late at night as you will not retain the information as well. Just do not wait to study until the last moment! You can not rush memory skills. It takes time and dedication.

After you get your CDL and are ready to work, there are other requirements/endorsements that you may be required to pass. This depends on the kind of truck that you are going to drive, or the kind of job you are going to do.

One common requirement is the airbrakes endorsement which is required for people who are going to operate a vehicle with airbrakes, which may include buses and/or trailers. Hazardous material endorsements (required to operate trucks that transport hazmat) are also very common. For this endorsement you must know all the rules and regulations about the transportation of this freight. Passenger endorsement is necessary to drive vehicles designed to move 16 or more people including the driver but most truck drivers will probably not be required to pass this. Another is cargo endorsement for people interested in hauling cargo. This mainly covers various safety rules. There is also a combination vehicle endorsement which is required for people who are going to drive vehicles such like tractors and trailers. Truck drivers may also be required to pass doubles and triple endorsements (to pull two or three trailer combinations, it also requires special skills) and tank vehicle endorsement (required for hauling liquids, this requires special training because the center of gravity and the movement of the liquid may cause a roll over more easy than other vehicles).

We have all heard all the talk about the fuel economy and innovations of Hybrid Cars and how they are sweeping the nation. Last year in 2004 in fact over 88,000 Hybrids were sold and waiting lists are still climbing. Honda, Toyota and Ford cannot build them fast enough. Things are changing indeed. Although still a drop in the bucket considering the average 17 million cars sold each year in the United States we can see a hyperbolic trend forming as oil prices stay high. Also with China and India entering the global game for demand for oil we will see the price per barrel to continue to remain high even if OPEC decides to stay on the same team, which built their industry there.

The Japanese are now showcasing their technologies in medium sized trucks. In fact Hino Motors, which makes the very popular box type delivery trucks you see around town is now making a diesel electric version to be available in the 2006 models in the US. More Female Truck Drivers On the Road

The number of female truck drivers has steadily increased over the years and today there are more women truck drivers than ever before. Not only are there more local women truck drivers, but there are also more long-haul truck drivers who are female.

In 1995 there were 130,000 female truck drivers and in 2005 there were 155,000 female truck drivers state; the American trucking Association. These figures are confirmed by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, part of the US federal government. The number of female truck drivers is increasing at a greater rate than ever before and by the end of 2007 is expected there will be over 200,000 female truck drivers.

The real issue is that there is a shortage of truck drivers in the United States that over the next decade could be as high as 700,000 and someone has to fill the gap. Interestingly enough female truck drivers tend to be very safe drivers and therefore they make excellent candidates for truck drivers.

Next time you pass a truck on the freeway perhaps you will look over and notice that it is not a male driver but rather a female and realize she is not alone. Currently we use electronic monitoring devices to see inside of truck trailers and cargo containers, not all of them, as we do not have the resources, but suspicious ones. We use these scanning systems to looking into border crossing trucks and questionable shipping containers. This works pretty well. However with the future of new materials we will be able to view the inside of containers and trucks using a device which sends and electrical pulse towards Truck Trailers and Cargo Containers, which have been made out of Carbon Nano Sheets, the material will remain opaque until which time a certain frequency is introduced. These carbon nano tube constructed sheets will be 50 times the strength of steel and as thin as a few sheets of paper. I propose we make these carbon nano tube sheets with visible manufactured memory technologies, which give us a product, which will become literally invisible or transparent upon introduction of a certain frequency.

A police car driving down the road, a weigh station or border crossing will have these frequency systems set to look inside upon entering the inspection stations or while driving if it is felt necessary. All truck trailers and cargo containers thru attrition and by 2020 would be required to be made out of such materials if they crossed our nations borders. Although this technology is not completely available yet, it is well within the potential attributes of such materials and within the realm of possibilities, therefore I suggest we start thinking on it.

Tires Your Most Essential Truck Accessory

There you are, driving along the highway in your 4X4 when you glance off to the side only to see an oh-so-inviting muddy logging trail. Can't pass this one up, you say to yourself, as you tug on the steering wheel and head off to 4-wheeler's heaven. Next thing you know, you're using your cell phone (if it works out in no-man's land) to call a tow truck. What happened? In the excitement of the moment, did you forget you still had highway tires on your truck? Oops!

Most light trucks come equipped with All Purpose tires, which are fine for everyday driving. But if you're an offroad enthusiast, you'll want to take the time to find the tire that's perfect for your offroad adventures. And there are plenty of options.

ALL-SEASON (All-Purpose) TIRES. These tires are adequate for driving in all four seasons. Most carry an M/S designation (Mud/Snow) but are really meant only for light snow. They don't have the proper rubber compound for cold weather, nor the open tread block pattern for the traction provided by a snow tire.

ALL-TERRAIN TIRES. These tires are a compromise for those who use their truck for general daily driving with only occasional off-road use. Surprisingly, they are designed with added grip for all terrain, dirt, sand, wet surfaces, light snow and light mud. But they are also good for general highway use and are relatively quiet on pavement. If you're going to be driving in heavy snow or thick mud, however, you need to move on to a tire designed with that purpose in mind.

SNOW TIRES. If you drive in light snow sporadically, you don't necessarily need snow tires--all-season tires should do the trick. But if you live in a severe-weather climate (or do a lot of driving in heavy snow), snow tires are for you. Snow tires have an open tread block pattern for better traction and should be narrower. More importantly, they are manufactured with a rubber compound that is more flexible in cold weather. The colder the climate, the less suitable your all-season tire becomes.

STUDDED SNOW TIRES. These are for icy winter conditions. They are studded (have metal posts embedded in them), allowing for up to 40% better traction in hard-packed snow and ice than an all-season tire. The downside, however, is the increased noise level as well as the fact that traction is decreased on dry and wet surfaces. Beyond that, due to the fact that they tend to chew up the pavement, many regions have either banned them all together or restricted their use to certain months of the year.

WINTER TIRES. Winter tires provide better traction in snowy and icy conditions. Their tread patterns and tread compounds are specifically designed for winter conditions. These tires perform better not only in snow, but also in slush and rain. And they're generally quieter than the snow tire. Look for the snowflake/mountain symbol which means they are certified to have met specific snow traction requirements.

MUD TIRES. If you're mudbogging, you need wide tires with large lugs. The lugs should have deep voids in between to expel the mud, allowing for better traction at each rotation. These tires, however, are generally loud on the highway, although you may find some exceptions. Mud tires are also good for rock climbing, sand and unpacked snow but do not perform well in icy conditions or in rain.

Two additional points to keep in mind ... don't try to cut corners by changing out only two tires. All four tires, whether they are snow tires or mud tires, should be the same. Two just won't do. And while the above list does not include any particular brand recommendations, the quickest, most reliable way to choose a good tire brand is to talk to other offroad entusiasts and find out what they're using in your area.

So there you have it. Tires are the most important truck accessory. Always make sure you have the right tires for the right job and you'll never have to embarrass yourself by calling a friend to come tow you out of an ugly mess.

With fuel prices at $3.00 per gallon for over the road truck diesel and the potential eventuality of a Showdown with Iran and a hard hitting 2006 Atlantic Tropical Hurricane Season does it really make sense to start a Truck Wash in 2006? Is this a good time to invest in the truck wash business and what is the Independent Truck Wash Business Outlook for 2006?

Well one could say that diesel prices are a key factor in the consideration of whether or not this is the best year to start a truck wash business. It would in fact depend on your marketing strategy. With costs so high in the trucking sector, especially for Independent Truck Drivers and Smaller Trucking Companies who are generally the highest paying customers for services, one could say it is not the best year at all.

However with larger trucking companies and record-breaking quarters in profits due to being able to better pass these costs onto their customers one could say this is the best year to be in the truck washing business. After all the economy is at a peak and water is still cheap too and there are more trucks on the road than ever before as well of course.

Nevertheless the marketing strategy is to be considered as well and price points are a key for those larger companies trying to keep profits up and the Independents and smaller companies hanging by a thread trying to stay in business with their few lucrative routes. Automated Satellite Following System Truck Convoys

The DARPA Challenge II is coming up soon and it appears we may have more than one team complete this years course. Forty robotic teams have been picked for a second round of the ultimate challenge. Why is this so important? Well many reasons, one is it ushers in a new age of robotics, which will change the destiny of mankind and provide for our forward progression. The other reason is that we have needs, which cannot be met of our armed forces.

The tip of the sword and war fighters of today must have a multitude of back-up and logistical supply chains to wage and win a war. If we are to be the leaders of the free world, stand up for human rights and lay down the law on tyrannical dictators of yesterdays Machiavellian principles, then we will need to do more with less. Right now the GAO and US Army are quite concerned with recruitment numbers and new sign up. We need systems which will allow us to move the logistical chain down the road without a driver in each vehicle, thru any terrain and not necessary roads, rivers or tracks. There fore the DARPA Challenge is very significant in our ability to maintain peace on the planet and defend against Evil.

Many systems to help do this are therefore being tested in a prize worth two-million dollars. Systems of navigation have been borrowed from all over the known scientific world. Systems of Artificial Intelligence, radar, lidar, sonar all combined using a net-centric approach to the vehicles electronics. It is possible now to drive vehicles tele-robotically and steering them using satellites. But in this contest everything must be autonomous and cannot use the satellite technologies except for way points so the vehicles stay within the contest borders; we do not want to squash any endangered; Desert Tortises.

In the end the military may use a combination of these technologies and some which were forbidden on the this challenge, however one should consider the Satellite navigation systems which do not necessarily need an actual satellite; they could use an aircraft, UAV, balloon, cell tower triangulation, etc..

I propose convoys in the future use a system similar to the ADD System. AFF stands for Automated Flight Following System, which is used in aerial fire fighting to insure that the fire retardant is dropped in the drop zone even though with the smoke the visibility is very low making it difficult to see. As one aircraft goes in another follows in behind it. This off the shelf technology has been used for over a decade now and with the advances of GPS accuracy and GIS modeling of surface terrain by satellite its uses should be incorporated into the laying of smart dust.

This technology is not allowed in the DARPA Challenge but is a solution for its mission of an unmanned convoy. I propose the AFF System be implemented along with some of these systems discussed here:

Truck Covers USA boasts this retractable tonneau cover to have the smallest canister on the market sizing in at 8x 8.They say that this truck bed cover has double- walled panels and can support over 500 pounds. Thats a whopping quarter ton plus.

The American roll is tension driven and has stop and lock points at every 12 inches which comes in handy when carrying different loads. It has a textured black powder coat finish which is very tough and durable.

Dirt is kept out of the side rails and canister with the aid of high quality automotive grade wool and brushes. This is where some retractable tonneau covers have a problem.

This is a clamp on tonneau cover with a minimum drilling of holes for the drain tubes of the canister as is for other retractable tonneau covers. They say it can be installed within 2 hours. If you open and close the cover a lot you may find having to unlock the cover a bit of a pain. This cover locks automatically. Its great for a fifth wheel. A quite of few people have commented on how strong the cover is.

As is with other retractable tonneau covers you may get slight leakage with a lot of water. I must say that this has to be my favorite manual retractable tonneau cover. Lets just go over some of the good points. It will save you gas - it will deter thieves by keeping things out of sight out of mind not to mention the added locking system which is one of the better locks on tonneau covers today the American roll will allow you to use your truck bed for tall loads without removing the cover Easy installation the cover will stop every twelve inches to accommodate your load - It comes with a 2 year warranty.

Now some of the negative points. May have slight leakage in heavy rain You need to unlock the cover every time you use it If you have a bed liner you may have to cut small sections of it for the clamps.

Truck Wash Hazardous Story

The truck wash industry and rail car cleaning sub-sector use lots of chemicals to clean. Here is a horrible story of what happens when businesses allow their employees to remove chemicals from the property. Not more than a year ago an employee took homes so Hydrofluoric Acid, he intended to use it on some car parts to clean them. He put the chemical in a water bottle and took it home. He wanted to keep it cool, because it is a dangerous chemical so he put it in the refrigerator. His roommate was thirsty when he later came home from work and accidentally; Yah you guessed it. He drank it.

Being in the carwash business I heard the story, which is true and thought of the company in question and realized that this is not their first serious with regards to their use of
hydrofluoric acid. The other lawsuit I had heard of was with rear view mirrors on trucks on freightliners by an OEM supplier, do not know if they decided to file or not. The company was not a franchise like our company, (truckwashguys.com) but they have a lot of locations.

Can you even imagine such a situation? That certainly is a terrible story? Drinking hydrofluoric acid internally? You would think you would smell it first? It is bad enough if you get it on your skin. I have before it makes a rash that will not quit, very painful,
bad news, mean stuff. For their sake I hope the employee is charged with criminal negligence or murder rather than the company taking the hit? I can see a motor-head type employee stealing it for cleaning parts on an auto project, but surely they train their folks on how serious it is and dangerous? That is simply crazy stuff indeed.

How does one accidentally drink HF? Oh my god that is not even funny, I do not even believe he would qualify for the Darwin Awards? Well at least it probably killed him quickly? What a way to go? There are labels all over such products? But once the employee put it in a regular water bottle that blows the safety label warnings. I wonder if it was murder as it sounds like hanky panky, accident? Think on this, do not let chemicals off the property in your truck wash.

Truck Performance 101 A Beginner's Guide

Today, the aftermarket gives truck owners more performance options than ever before. However, all the new truck performance products and gizmos can be a little hard to sort through. What you need for your specific truck's performance will depend on what type of truck you have and what you use it for.

What is performance? Basically, it is the word used to describe speed, fuel consumption rate and towing ability. Performance is primarily measured in terms of horsepower (HP) and Torque.

Horsepower, or HP, is by definition, the power of an engine in comparison to horses. For example, a truck with 100 horsepower is as fast as 100 horses all rolled into one. Horsepower is often indicative of a trucks top speed. Horsepower does not necessarily mean that a truck is fast from a standing start (see torque) but instead it is often indicative of the speed attainable by a particular truck. This being said other factors such as weight and grade will impact the final speed achieved. In more scientific terms, HP is the common measurement when rating an engine's power. One horsepower equals 500 ft-lbs. per second, which is basically the power needed to lift 550 pounds one foot off the ground in exactly one second or the power needed to lift 33,000 pounds one foot off the ground in exactly one minute.

Torque refers to a trucks ability to generate pick up. Torque is one of the most important factors at the beginning of any non-rolling start. It is the ability of the truck to send power to the wheels and turn them - moving the entire truck forward. The dictionary defines it as: The moment of a force; the measure of a force's tendency to produce torsion and rotation about an axis. The most important thing to remember is that torque is what gets the truck rolling and is very important in towing.

The basics of performance, of course, center on your engine. Think of your engine as basically a big air pump. It breathes air in through the air intake and breathes it out through the exhaust. The easier your engine can breathe the more performance it will deliver. The stock engine you received from the factory comes with OEM air induction and exhaust. Modifying these two areas is relatively easy and can deliver significant increases in both HP and torque. One other primary factor affecting your performance is the engines computer. The stock OEM computer your truck came with is set to a safe mode to protect the truck against virtually any driver errore.g., redlining. Although these settings are meant to protect the truck, they can impede performance significantly. Tweaking your trucks computer can significantly increase HP and torque while still providing safety to the engine. Well look at each of these three performance enhancements below.

Air Intake

The air intake primarily consists of your vehicles air filter. Stock air filters are made of pleated paper. The problem with pleated paper is it often tends to become clogged which greatly reduces the airflow. Fragments of paper are ingested or sucked into the intake system creating a hole for gritty contaminants to enter the engine. In addition, these filters have to be replaced often to maintain a basic level of performance. Aftermarket filters are made of cotton gauze or engineered foam. These filters, made by companies like K&N, Airaid, Green Filter and True Flow significantly increase the flow of air through the filter. In addition, these filters defend against dirt at twice the rate or more than their paper counterparts and most come with a lifetime warrantythats one filter for the life of your vehicle. Aftermarket companiesmany of the same mentioned abovehave developed systems called Cold Air Intakes, that move the point of air intake from the top of your engine, which is normally very hot, to a point outside the engine. The result is that the air being sucked into your engine is much cooler than it would be using the normal air filter location. Cold air intakes require a little more handyman skills that just replacing a filter. However, they can be installed easily by anyone that has basic tools.

Exhaust Systems

Exhaust is the exhale to your engines lungs. The more twists and turns in the exhaust, the less your vehicle can breathe easily. Exhaust systems come with three primary elementsthe muffler, exhaust pipes and muffler tips. The first two are the main ingredients that effect HP and torque. OEM factory exhausts are well made, but not designed to deliver maximum performance. Aftermarket systems from companies like Magnaflow, Banks and Gibson are engineered specifically for each truck and are designed to get the most out of your vehicle. In addition to more power, these systems also deliver an enviable roar that will let others know you have tricked out your truck. I do not recommend installing an exhaust system unless you are a true gear head and are prepared for cutting and welding. Although most muffler shops do not carry these products, they will be glad to install them for you.

Computer Chips and Programmers

Your trucks computer is technically referred to by gear heads as the Engine Control Unit (ECU). The ECU that controls the engine is very complicated. OEM's program them to satisfy emissions requirements, meet EPA fuel economy requirements and protect the engine against abuse. The computer does this by controlling many aspects of the vehicles performance, but primarily controls the ignition, fuel injection and spark time. As mentioned above, the OEMs set the default value of the ECU to an ultra-safe mode to insure adherence to government guidelines and to protect the engine from abusive driving. Aftermarket companies like Hypertech, Edge, Unichip and Superchips manufacturer chips and programmers that will either plug into your ECU or programmers that will alter the factory settings. Chip manufacturers set the products for each specific vehicle to a default performance setting. Programmer manufacturers allow more versatility in that they allow custom modifications to compensate for other performance add-ons like cold air kits and exhaust systems. These systems are relatively easy to install by anyone that has a little mechanical knowledge.

In conclusion, you can significantly increase your HP and Speed by just making these basic changes to your truck. Some all-in-one kits can deliver up to a 40% increase in overall performance. Finally, contrary to rumor, none of these products will void the warranty of your truck. The Rollbak tonneau cover has so many features I could probably sit here and type all day long about it. I will try to resist myself and make this short and sweet. The Rollbak truck bed cover is made by Bak Industries and is one tough tonneau cover.

It is a retractable tonneau cover which retracts into a canister behind the truck cab. The canister is made of a rugged ABS which is very durable and with its rounded design is made to expel water. The average canister is about 8.5 inches in diameter and some are even smaller which leaves you with an added space under the canister in the front of the truck bed.

The side rails are lined with high density polyethylene which is even better than Teflon as Teflon freezes. You never have to grease this, and it will work well in all types of weather. Hot, cold, wet or dry, this cover is made for all weather.

The slats of the rollback retractable tonneau cover are made of powder coated industrial strength aluminum strong enough to withstand over 400 pounds. The slats are designed to channel water to the side tracks and then to the ABS canister and then out the bottom of the truck through hoses. The way the slats are designed, even if any water does get through the surface of the slats, it is still channeled to the side tracks.

The system is designed to stop every twelve inches as you close it so you can close it pretty much anywhere you want. The Rollbak truck bed cover locks automatically when closed all the way. There is no visible latch or locking system as it latches underneath the tonneau cover. You have to open the tailgate to access the latch for the truck bed cover. Then if you install a locking tailgate latch your tonneau cover is a very secure storage area. You can lift or lower the tailgate without moving the tonneau cover and the stake holes along the side of your truck bed remain uncovered which is great for any type of rack you use or tie downs.

The powder coat flat paint is a very durable finish which you can wax as you would the rest of your truck body. The installation is a no drill clamp system, but many applications use two self tapping screws at the front inside corners.

Listening to testimonials, mostly everyone loved the look and action of the Rollbak tonneau cover. However they pretty much all had a problem with the instructions that came with the truck bed cover. They were pretty vague and conflicted with the installation video on the Bak Industries website. It seems they were all able to get through the installation but would be much faster at it if they had to do it again.
